This song was written during one of our trying times, personally. That’s when many of the Psalms of David were composed too! This is taken from Paul’s words, when he was struggling himself with an evil spirit. Every one of us will go through that, if we truly trust in God and in His Son Yeshua. We will be tried, for the perfecting of our faith! Remembering through it all that His Compassion is ALWAYS ENOUGH is how we ‘cleave to Him’, until the end!

“Etz Khayim” is the “Tree of Life”. It is the way the book of Proverbs describes the Torah. It is also an allusion to the manner of Yeshua’s death, who hung on the Tree! [ Acts 5:30, 10:39, 13:29, 1 Peter 2:24] It is also the “Olive Tree” into which all Gentiles are grafted, if they truly trust in God’s SON. [Romans 11:17-24]
We sing the traditional “Etz Khayim” each week while we revere the Torah after having read our portions from it. This version makes the song more joyful, invoking dance! And it gives us a little more time to meditate on the Tree on which Yeshua perished for us, which GIVES US LIFE!

According to Yeshua, the Shema, or Deuteronomy 6:4, is the GREATEST commandment! It tells us that God is ONE! And that we should LOVE HIM with all our being and actions. And the Second commandment is then to love one another. We will only truly love one another when we first love God, as He has loved us! We sing this lively rendition during our ‘procession’, and then the traditional Shema melody before we read the Torah.

“A New Song”, and that is really the only reason why this was composed; Psalm 96 is a prayer that is often recited on Shabbat. We have a great desire to declare His Wondrous Salvation “Yeshu’aH”, which is exactly what Yeshua’s Name means, to the whole world, whether they listen or not. Also, we are instructed to declare His Name to the NATIONS/GENTILES. That cannot be done if we are blotting it out with “HaShem”, or changing it with “Adonai”. It is not wrong to call Him “Adonai”, unless one is citing scripture and at the same time changing His Name out with another word. We simply cannot do that, as it is to us unconscionable. That was part of the reason this song came about.

The title kind of says why this one was birthed: A deep desire to PRAISE GOD JOYFULLY during the good times! He is ALWAYS on His Throne, reigning FOREVER! The World will soon figure that out! The more we sing this, the more I love it! “His Praise will ALWAYS be in my mouth!”

We pray Psalm 100 each week to begin our worship, to “enter His Gates”. This Psalm was prayed daily in the Temple when Yeshua was there. It compels the whole world to come before God to worship Him. One day, all the world finally will. Those who choose to do so now are the Righteous Ones in the earth. This was our motivation for writing this melody, so that we can enjoy it to music, as King David intended it. This is the very FIRST live performance of it, after only 1 rehearsal.

This song has a very cool ‘origin story’, to me. One Shabbat before service, I was praying the prayers [Acts 2:42], and I use number patterns by which to cycle through them. “The prayers” are the Psalms. Hebrew calls them “Tehillim”, or “Praises”. Most of them were written to song. But, that Shabbat I was praying them, and I prayed psalm 115, and ‘noticed’ God telling Israel, Aharon [the Priesthood], and God fearing people to TRUST Him, because he is their SHIELD [v 9-11]. Then, minutes later, I got to 135, and I noticed a similar pattern in the last three verses [19-21], and ‘felt’ a rhythm. So, I put a song together at the piano when I got home that day. A couple of weeks later, back in the praying pattern, I got to Psalm 118 and found a similar pattern of verses [2-4], so I added another ‘verse’ to the song! It quickly became a favorite!

This song was originally composed in an English only version; but, one day it was suggested to put it into a minor key and add the Hebrew. It was written during a very tumultuous time early in our life, when our lives and our children’s lives were constantly threatened by an evil, criminal element. God promised His protection, and thirty years later He has been shown faithful! He did “Make Haste”! Let those who love YOUR SALVATION say “Let God be PRAISED!”

Avinu Sh’bashaMayim: After learning the “Disciple’s Prayer”, (which most people call “The Lord’s Prayer”), a prayer Yeshua gave to His Talmidim when they asked Him “Teach us to pray,” the words just kept going through my head, until they made this little chorus. It’s just the first few lines, “Our Father who is in Heaven, holy is Your Name, let Your Kingdom come! But isn’t that what we want? His Kingdom operating in our lives, AND, the appearance of Messiah on Earth again! “Tavo Malkhutekha!”

About 28 years or so ago, I had a desire to tell the Gospel accurately in a single song, and worship Him in it. There are key expressions in this one that I believe many people have forgotten or perverted. Yeshua is the Son of God; He said so [ Jo 10:36 ], Peter said so [Mat 16:16], Nathaniel said so [ Jo 1:49 ], and that is how the Apostles preached Him [ Acts 9:20 , 2 Cor 1:19 ]. Yeshua came out of the Father, that is what He said about Himself [ Jo 8:42 , 16:28 ]. Yeshua is the King [ Jo 1:49 ].

We began noticing things in the world were ‘off’, many years ago. “Spiritual Warfare” seemed to be on an uptick in our congregational life, and we set the congregation to prayer and fasting. This song was birthed during that time. It also seems to have foreshadowed things that would soon happen congregationally. And since, the whole world has been unveiled to the rampant evil in it, while most of God’s people sit by, trying to ignore it all, much like Germany’s people did during the Shoah. We hope someone will wake up to the colossal battle that is already upon us! And begin to PRAY like they did in Acts 4, when they prayed from the prayer book: Psalms! These verses come from Psalm 2 and Acts 4.

Psalm 24 is the “Daily Psalm” for the first day of the week. It is also part of the rites of entering into prayer every morning. Some years back, a group in Israel shared “Se’u Sh’arim” on YouTube, “Lift up You Gates!”, and we found it very compelling, however, it is just the last four verse of the song, and the first six are just as compelling. “Who shall ascend?” And the one who can ascend will receive a blessing, and the SALVATION of God. And that will happen when the gates open, and the KING OF GLORY comes in! I can’t wait to hear this song done with a proper group of humble musicians, and maybe a better pianist than myself…

“The Gathering” was written by my wife, during a study of the book of “Hitgalut”, “Revelation”, almost thirty years ago. This song is still in high demand, from those who know us… We may re-record it soon, too. It kinda speaks for itself. One day SOON, our Messiah is going to come for His Bride, those who know Him, trust Him, and dress in white [obey Him].

We have no words to describe this one’s origin, beyond just the compelling desire to be in His Presence. One day, at the end of the ages, those who are SAVED will gather around the Throne of God and the Lamb and sing these words. Corporate worship is commanded, and is seen throughout the book of Revelation, speaking prayers, playing instruments, and singing. There is power in the Word of God set to music. David showed us that. Experience it! Embrace it!
